Real Island, Real Footage: Our Promise to You in the Age of AI

For a long time, St Helena was one of the most sheltered places on Earth. Out in the South Atlantic, nearly 2,000 km from the nearest continent, we were far enough away that the world’s trends took a while to reach us.

Visitors came for exactly that: a place that still feels like itself, where life moves at its own pace and the welcome is genuine.

That is changing, and mostly for the better. Unlimited internet is now part of island life, and the effect on our tourism industry is hard to overstate. Travellers can find us more easily. We can answer questions in real time, share what’s happening on the island today rather than last month, and talk directly to the people planning a trip.

Trade partners, tour operators and travel agents around the world can now see St Helena, ask about it and book it with far less friction than ever before. An island that once felt out of reach is much easier to get to know before you arrive.

A new challenge: what’s real?

Better connection comes with a new problem. The internet is now full of AI-generated images, videos and reels. Some are impressive. Many are indistinguishable from the real thing. Others look beautiful but show places, views and experiences that don’t exist, or that look nothing like that in real life.

When you’re planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip to a remote island, that matters. You’re trusting a handful of photos and clips to tell you what you’ll actually see, and it’s a big commitment of time and money to travel this far. You deserve to know that what you’re looking at is true.

So we want to be completely clear with you.

We do not use AI to generate our images, and we do not use it to create our reels or videos.

Everything you see from Destination St Helena was shot by us, on this island. That includes the photographs, the video clips and the aerial footage. It comes from a growing library we’ve built over years of living and working here: Jamestown at golden hour, the sweep of the coastline from above, the view from the top of Jacob’s Ladder, and the moment someone’s face lights up on a boat trip.

How we built our library

Our content isn’t created at a desk. It’s gathered out on the island, in all kinds of weather and light. We shoot on the road, over the water, in the hills and from the air, and we keep what we capture so that our bank of photos and clips keeps growing. That means when we show you a view, there’s a real day and a real moment behind it.

Having such a large library also means we can show you St Helena in its many moods. Bright, clear mornings. Cloud rolling over the ridges. Calm seas and rougher ones. We’d rather you see the island as it truly is than a single polished version that never quite matches reality.

Why it matters

Trust is the foundation of a good holiday. When you book a destination you’ve never seen, you’re relying on the people behind the booking to be honest about what’s waiting for you.

  • What you see is what you’ll get. The footage on our website and social channels is the island as it really is, on real days, in real light.

  • We stand behind it. Every image is something we shot, which means it’s something we can show you in person.

  • It supports the island. Our library is built by islanders, for visitors, and it reflects the places and experiences we know and love.

  • It protects your expectations. Honest imagery means fewer surprises and more of the good kind when you arrive.

Local knowledge you can’t generate

The same goes for how we run your trip. As a local destination management company, we look after ground handling, accommodation, transfers and excursions, and we coordinate it all personally. From your airport transfer and your self-catering stay to a day at sea with whale sharks, the people you deal with are the people who live here.

No algorithm can tell you which viewpoint is best on a clear morning, which local has the best story about the house on the corner, or when to slow down and simply enjoy the view. That comes from knowing the place, and from caring about how your visit goes.

For our travel trade partners

If you’re a tour operator, agent or planner considering St Helena for your clients, the same promise applies to you. You’re welcome to use our genuine imagery and footage to show your clients what the island offers, knowing it’s authentic and that we can deliver the experiences it shows. Your clients’ trust in you is built on what you put in front of them, and we want to make sure St Helena never lets you down.

The future of St Helena’s tourism Industry

We’re excited about what’s ahead. Better connectivity means more people will discover St Helena, and we want to welcome them with an honest picture of what the island offers. But the future of tourism here isn’t only about the footage. It’s also about how smoothly your trip comes together behind the scenes.

Islands like ours have always been known for personal service, and that hasn’t changed. What has changed is the tools we use to deliver it. Whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, with family or as part of a larger group, every booking at Destination St Helena is managed through a dedicated CRM system. Your enquiry, your dates, your accommodation, your transfers, your excursions and every conversation we’ve had with you are kept together in one place, rather than scattered across inboxes and notebooks. It means nothing gets lost, and whoever on our team picks up your trip already knows the full picture.

That joined-up approach makes the booking experience easier for you:

  • Simpler payments. We offer easier ways for clients to pay, so securing your trip from the other side of the world is straightforward and not a headache.

  • Timely reminders. Payment dates, arrival details and key information reach you when you need them, so nothing slips through the cracks before you travel.

  • Interactive itineraries. Instead of a static document, you can follow your trip day by day in a format that’s clear, easy to use on your phone and simple for us to update if plans change.

  • Group travel made easy. For group organisers and trade partners, keeping every traveller, room, transfer and excursion in one system means less chasing and fewer errors, even when numbers are large.

  • One team, one record. Your whole trip, from airport transfer to the last farewell, is coordinated by the same local team using the same information.

The point is simple. We want the technology to take care of the admin so our people can spend their time on what matters: looking after you and sharing the island we love.

The world online may be getting harder to trust, but that’s exactly why authenticity matters more than ever. So the next time you scroll past a perfect, impossible-looking image of a far-flung island, remember that here, what you see is real, and the team planning your trip is real too. We shot it ourselves, and we’ll look after you from first enquiry to final goodbye.
